After two rounds in relative benign conditions (2-3 club breeze) we arrived at Waterville with strong winds and pelting cold rain. This felt like a different golf course. A different experience and one closer to that which we had expected. Even the locals said it was “breezy”.
Waterville has a number of challenging holes but the most challenging aspect on a day like today is the change of direction. Holes at Waterville play towards all points of the compass which makes distance selection demanding to say the least.
Downwind. Sidewind. Crosswind and straight into the teeth of it. The Par 3’s playing long where yesterday’s 7iron became today’s 3wood. Par 5’s previously reachable in two, now three and a chip. Downwind – Driver wedge. A true test of golf – a true Links experience. Enjoyable every step of the way.
