As always, I bring my cameras to capture the essence of the golf course and surrounding areas that we have the pleasure to visit. Waterville Golf Links didn’t disappoint and showed us all of her beauty and different moods.
Narrow roads in the middle of the night led us to the welcoming guesthouse, Brookhaven, located just outside of Waterville. We enjoyed a tasty well-cooked breakfast each morning together with other golfers before we took off to the golf course. First day we had sunshine, mild weather and a small breeze. I could not for my life get the hang of the greens. But I fought hard for 35 points the first 18 holes.
Second day we had another thing coming, cloudy and storm like conditions. With winds at 50 km/h it was hard to stand up and the golf ball barely laid still on the green. It was 5 – 7 extra clubs into the wind. We had no chance. My chip-in for birdie on the tough 16 was better than I deserved.
We only played 18 holes on the second day (more than enough in tough conditions) and drove along the “Ring of Kerry” to see what the area had to offer. The amazing 1000 foot Kerry Cliffs outside of Portmagee was pretty amazing. We visited Waterville House and also said hello to the Charlie Chaplin statue in the middle of Waterville village. Ha came here a lot to relax in his glory days.
On the third day the wind was a little calmer but still quite windy. 3-4 extra clubs into the wind. The Mass-hole on paper is an easy par 3 and only 151 meters. But nothing here is easy. After 5 rounds of golf with 3 golfers, none of us had hit green or even walked away with par. In the 16th century the Irish came to the Mass-hole to pray. We could have used some help from above on this one …
One thing I will remember about Waterville is its people. So friendly and welcoming. Everyone from Mary at Brookhaven, General Manager Noel, Professional Liam, Caddiemaster Kevin to the local pubs who welcomed us with “Good evening lads, did you have a nice round? I saw you at the course today, terrible winds”. An enjoyable experience and one that I will remember for a long time.
